Back in the day, when I DJ’d at dublab, I was the resident garage rock guy.  I spun old Back From the Grave and Pebbles tunes, played rare Warlocks stuff I recorded live when they were just starting out, and had interviews with members of the Raymen and Fuzztones.
I was a far cry from the [...]

I’m old enough to remember when modern guerilla marketing had yet to be invented, and random posters and stickers wheat-pasted onto billboards and bus benches in the twilight hours for folks to see the next day were still seen as revolutionary “culture jamming.”  Leading the pack in visibility were the ubiquitous and hilarious “Andre the [...]

I’d always loved the Velvet Underground song “Coney Island Steeplechase” from the Another View rarities CD.
But I never got the significance of the reference to “a sister and brother that cling to each other” until I saw a bit of the great Coney Island: The American Experience documentary last night.

The Steeplechase was the name of an amusement park, [...]

For a lack of anything better to do, my gal and I ended up watching the Oscars tonight.  I’m glad No Country for Old Men won for Best Picture, but it was only during the acceptance speech, when producer Scott Rudin thanked his partner, that we realized he was one of “teh gays”–and for whatever [...]

Space.com is reporting a weird haze traveling up and down the planet Venus.

My main man Danny just blogged about Friday’s Real Boss Hoss celebration at Mr. T’s, over on the L.A. Record.  I was there as well, but had seen some of these bands last week already, so it was interesting to get a fresh perspective.
While Danny does give lots of well-deserved praise to the opening band, Some Dudes [that's their real name, [...]

Fidel calls it quits

Fidel Castro officially retired today.  He’s not dead, but his reports of retiring read like an obit (from Reuters):
“Fidel Castro’s resignation is the end of an era that started with freedom and ended with oppression,” said Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.
The charismatic Castro led the bearded and cigar-chomping guerrillas who swept down from the mountains [...]

Afri Cola

I just learned that Galco’s used to carry Afri Cola, until like two years ago!
I discovered this old German cola through a commercial that was in the Monks documentary I saw a couple years back at Don’t Knock the Rock.  Designed by Yves Klein protege Charles Wilp, the commercial was originally intended to have Monks [...]
